Beauty isn't measured in pounds but love
hello my friends
I know I'm really late with this but this is something I am really passionate about raising awareness for all mental health illnesses, conditions or disorders. I wanted to post this and raise awareness and demolish some misconceptions on eating disorders
before I start I want to direct you to the source of a lot of my facts Laura Lejeune who is a mental health youtuber and I will defiantly be doing more surrounding my favourite mental health youtubers over the next week or so, so if you want to go check her out and subscribe if you are in recovery or if your interested in mental health I will link her channel. I also want to tell you about another recovery channel LikeKristen I also really love her Channel its super informative.
misconception one: "I'm too fat to have an eating disorder" a lot of people think to have an eating disorder you need to be under weight. this fact is not true in the slightest. only 10% of people suffering with an eating disorder suffer from anorexia. while 40% suffer from bulimia, since bulimics go through stages of bingeing and purging (eating a large amount then making themselves sick or abusing laxatives to loose the weight they have put on) they will be of a healthy weight or be over weight they don't necessarily have to be under weight. having any type if eating disorder is physically and emotionally damaging, being under weight doesn't mean that its having a worse effect on the person then being a healthy weight or being over weight
misconception two: "it only effects teenage girls" is something iv heard a lot however that's not true. 43% of people suffering with eating disorders are 16-20 years of age, 33% are 11- 15 years of age, 14% are after 20 years of age and 10% are 10 or younger. yes, a large percentage are teens however with social media and how exposited we are to dangerous material we are more likely to have eating disorders and through my own personal experience kids are meaner; in schools, on the streets. they have gotten a lot meaner to their peers a lot of it is because they want to fit in and be liked however a lot of kids push others into tho mental health issues like depression, eating disorders, anxiety and self harm. however its not just girls one in ten eating disorder suffers are male.
misconception three: "if they wanted to get better they would" this isn't true. eating disorders are 50% a brain disorder and 50% psychological disorders. eating disorders can develop because of many things; anxiety, family issues, abuse, bullying or even a coping meconium. eating disorders are 50% inherited in their genetics or is biological. if your parent have had mental health issues in their past it means you are more exposed to it, even if it was before your born you still have a high chance of developing it
misconception four: "its just a phase" more people die from eating disorders then they do of breast cancer. if people stopped thinking its just a phase and they will just get over it, it will make it seen as the big issue it is. more people die of eating disorders then of any other mental health or behavral issue. including depression. its not just a phrase it effects the brain and the body. it attacks your two vital organs your brain and heart. it kills people the more people understand this the more this misconception will die out which is what we definitely need
these are four misconceptions about eating disorders if you have any more then leave a comment or tweet me @p_a_pblog. If you have an eating disorder then please go get help, the sooner you let someone know and get help then the less damage is being done on your body. stay safe and strong beautiful x
